Things of the Heart

curly red hearts

I like red hearts, pink flowers, and chocolate candy.
Lace doilies, cupcakes, and frilly valentines are dandy.

But the things I love best are smiles, hugs, and words that inspire.
These are my heart’s true desire.

Things said and done that money can’t buy.
A shoulder that’s there when I need to cry,

Or a helping hand to pick me up from a fall,
These are the things I love most of all.

Things that are bought can be very nice.
I like little wrapped gifts, and I don’t think twice

About accepting them from family and friends,
For I like the message of love that a little gift sends.

Yet, give me your time, talent, and heart’s treasure,
For those are the things I value without measure.

Time spent listening to my joys, dreams, or sorrows,
Talent given to make me better tomorrows;

Treasures of your heart, like compassion and care,
Give me any of these, and nothing will compare.

For when those things are given, they are most precious you see,
Because they are a bit of you being deposited into me!

  Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Spare Room

It’s some better today.
The pain in my heart has not gone way,
but the initial reaction to it all
has fallen away like a leaf in the fall.

All that lies now within my sight,
is a room that is empty,
but cheery and bright.
Void of his things, it sits there,
clean, and willing to be called “spare”.
This room that held him and all he held dear,
is with me still, though he is not near.

It helps that it has a different look,
for when I pass by I don’t see his favorite nook.
New pillows and coverlet are now upon the bed,
and the walls hold my pictures instead.
Traces of him are no longer found in there,
were it not so, it would be too much to bear.

I pray that someday, he will find his way,
and God will show him what to do and say,
To accomplish the purpose that God created him for,
Then the spare room will rejoice, and might hold him once more.

Fall Friendship Treat

In an attractive cloth bag
Freshly picked apples
A fall culinary treat
A gift from a friend
Sharing her bounty
Apple pie
Soon!

(This is my first attempt at writing a Epulaeryu.  It was a fun challenge!
I want to thank Daisy Mariposa for her excellent Hub on Poetry Forms
for that is where I first learned of this Epulaeryu poetry style.
And, of course, my friend Bonnie, for the lovely apples which inspired me to write this!)
