Debutant

An interesting day.
I learned a thing or two.
I did something,
I thought I’d never do.
I took the challenge.
I  fiercely saw it through.
This made an ordinary day,
Into something quite brand new.
Opportunity visited,
And I made my debut.

Take Time

“Take time to smell the flowers.”
My dad used to always say.
Stop in the middle if your busy life,
And take some time to pray.
Cease your constant rushing,
And focus on today.
For you often miss what’s important,
As you hurry along the way.
Your life will be much richer,
If you take some time each day,
To stop, look, and listen,
To what the things around you convey.

Goodbye July

Goodbye July
A fitting farewell to July was the sight of our Flag
Flying in the breeze at sunset tonight.

The days of July are coming to a close,
We have come to the end of its last day.
The sun has set on another month.
Summer is quickly running away…

Letting Go

Every day has its challenges.
All life has ups and downs.
Many a day problems will come,
And turn smiles into frowns.
Focusing on what should have been,
And complaining negatively,
Is not going to change the present,
Or make “if only” come to be.
Therefore when upsets come,
It’s best to just smile and say,
“This isn’t what I hoped would happen,
But I’ll make the best of it anyway”

Daily Prayer

This daily prayer I do say.
Lord, in heaven on high,
Lead and guide me to Your way.

Lord, protect me I pray.
From all evil that might come nigh.
This daily prayer I do say,

Whether I be at work or play,
I ask that You, my needs supply.
Lead and guide me to Your way.

Teach me what I should say.
Show me Your word to apply.
This daily prayer I do say.

Lord, help me make it through this day.
If my plans go awry,
Lead and guide me to Your way.

Help me, my words to weigh,
That You I might glorify.
This daily prayer I do say,
Lead and guide me to Your way.

Villanelle

(This is my first attempt at writing a Villanelle.  It was very challenging.)

An Early Morning Visitor

Morning_Visitor

Caw! Caw! Caw!
He said,
while perching on my deck.

Standing tall,
He raised his head,
Caw! Caw! Caw!

This unwelcome visitor
awoke and rousted me from bed.
Caw! Caw! Caw!

Other places he could land.
He chose my deck instead.
Caw! Caw! Caw!

Loudly, boldly,
His voice pled,
Caw! Caw! Caw!

Then he was gone.
Into the meadow he fled.
Caw! Caw! Caw!

Patriotic Pantoum

Flowing over me,
Come thoughts of liberty,
Every time our Flag I see,
Flying over land or sea.

Come!  Thoughts  of liberty.
I welcome you to dwell in me,
Every time our Flag I see.
For you’re a reminder I am free!

I welcome you to dwell in me,
Patriotic thoughts of liberty!
For you’re a reminder I am free.
At times I need you desperately!

Patriotic thoughts of liberty,
Every time our Flag I see.
At times I need you desperately,
Flowing over me.

Pantoum-rhyme scheme aaaa
(This is my first attempt at writing a Pantoum.  It was a challenge, and even more so, because I chose to rhyme it aaaa instead of the usual abab)

A Clerihew is a whimsical, four-line biographical poem, in an aabb form.

Not Carefree

In my imagination,
I see a day that’s red light free.
No stopping or starting,
Just cruising happily.
I’d reach my destination,
So very easily,
If I had nothing in the way,
To bring delay to me.
Yet life is not that simple,
And in true reality.
A few red lights are always needed,
To make me stop and see,
That often an interruption,
Becomes a great possibility.
One which could be missed,
by living a green light fantasy.

The Day After…

The fireworks are over,
The celebrations cease.
Independence Day has passed,
Patriotism tends to decrease.
Yet, Old Glory still stands waving,
For she celebrates freedom everyday.
Her Stars and Stripes fly freely,
Unflurried, come what may.
May her presence daily remind us,
To value our liberty.
Let’s choose to celebrate everyday,
We live in this Home of the Free!
