Thank You Essentials

Mask

The few

Essential ones

Their dedication and

Skills kept us going at night and day

Let’s not

Forget

Their faithful determination

To face fear head on

In such a time

As this

Butterfly Cinquain

While I appreciate and salute all who served as essentials during COVID-19, I specifically want to dedicate this poem to my grand-daughter Vivian, age 21, who is a care-giver at a nursing home.

Vivian faithfully worked many long and extra shifts to take care of the residents during quarantine.

And also, want to dedicate this poem to my other grand-daughter’s boyfriend, Michael, age 20, who is an auto maintenance worker, earning minimum wage. Micheal faithfully worked many long days and extra hours with no extra raise in wages during this time of pandemic.

Thanks to both of these hard working young people and many others I don’t know.

Let’s remember it was people like this that kept our country going during the pandemic.

Caught Red Handed

Red raspberries on a bush

Red raspberries from grandpa’s garden

Secretly picked, (or so we thought…)

A little bit of sweetness,

A quick pick and fast run,

Tasted extra good,

Covertly eaten,

In a tree.

Cheesecake and raspberriesAs I was eating a piece of cheesecake topped with fresh red raspberries today, the memory of grandpa’s red raspberries came to mind.

My grandpa lived in the country and always had a big garden. He grew strawberries, potatoes, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, beans, peas, sweet corn and much more. I loved eating all the bounty from his garden but my most favorite was the big red raspberries from the berry bushes along the fence.

And even though we kids were warned to stay out of the garden and berries unless grandpa was with us, we used to sometimes try to sneak in to see if we could pick and run without being seen! 😊

But alas, grandpa would always see us or catch us, (most of the time,) and then we’d get a stern talking to from him. 😊

April 2020

Earth “stay home” inage

April’s thirty days

Filled with uncertainty

Are history

Goodbye April 2020. You can claim you were the first full month of the pandemic.

The New Normal

Social distancing, 6 feet apart

Talking with my neighbor,

Keeping our 6 foot distance,

Our words floating through the air

Land upon others ears

Across the courtyard.

Soon a 6 foot convention

Gathers. “The new normal.”

Someday Soon

Field of blooming hyacinth, sunshine

Dreaming

Of someday

Of brighter tomorrows

In rooms smelling of hyacinths

Surrounded

By sounds

Of angelic host singing sweetly

Around heaven’s great throne

Filled with light

From Him

Earth Day 2020

Earth wearing a white mask

I looked

Around the earth

The trees were doing fine

As they whispered to the wind

Waving

Welcome

To the sunshine

That Spring had provided

Even though virus threatened their

People

I looked

Around the earth

The birds were doing fine

As they sang sweetly in the garden

Greeting

Morning

Cheerfully as

If the virus didn’t

Exist among many of the earth’s

People

I looked

Around the earh

The flowers grew and bloomed

Dressed in glorious colors

Earth’s fine

Neath the Masks

Face masks

This new normal is

Filled with masks and 6 foot marks.

A world so surreal

Senryu

Since this Sheltering in Place took effect I have only been going out to the stores one day a week to get my groceries and necessary supplies.

Each week I see more and more changes taking affect. More control, more limiting, more distancing and this week, today it was more masks.

It seemed everyone was wearing masks today, where in previous week just a few were doing so.

It just seemed so surreal seeing everyone all around me in masks.
