Blind Birds?

Doves, Birdbath, yard, springtime

Blessings

Within their reach

Abundantly given

Yet they seek the world’s meager scraps

Instead

Cinquain

My daughter sat on her porch and watched the two doves walk down the street together as if they were humans out for an evening stroll.

They had visited her yard previously to check it out, tasting of its goodness, yet today they bypassed her fresh green yard overflowing with beautiful foliage, birdseed, and a water filled birdbath, to forage in the dry, dusty gutter. Were they blind to the goodness nearby that was offered to them so freely, or did they just stubbornly choose to ignore it, determinedto live their in own way?

It makes one ponder if we humans are the same. Do we walk blindly through this world, seeking to find blessings and happiness in our own way while all the while passing by the goodness God has provided to those who will stop to believe and receive From Him?

Life at Heritage Place offers peaceful activity.

The large green yard filled with trees and blooming bushes is a perfect stage for local wildlife to gather and perform daily.

Every morning I open my blinds to reveal some new activity outside my window.

Perhaps the pesky squirrel sits poised, picture perfect, holding a peanut that the generous neighbor upstairs tossed down from her deck. She enjoys Mr Squirrel’s antics on stage and applauds him by throwing nuts instead of flowers. I would much prefer she fed the birds instead.

The Matinee yesterday featured a rather large raven splashing in the Birdbath, happily washing away winter’s dust. As I drew near to capture a picture of him sitting there, feathers shining blue in the sun, he chose to fly away before the camera could focus.

My camera and I often have many such “Camera Shy” encounters with the backyard birds, especially the Collared Dove Family. They are a skittish sort. Oh, that they were they more willing to sit and pose as Mr Squirrel does.

Towards evening the stage fills with a symphony of birdsong in the trees. A chorus of Sparrows, Robins, Chickadees,Towhees, Jays, Ravens, and Crows entertain with the Dove headlining.

As the sun lowers to meet the earth, the blinds close once again on nature’s stage just a few footsteps away from my door and I give thanks to my Creator for another day of life.

NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 12

Today, we’d like to challenge you specifically to write a haibun that takes in the natural landscape of the place you live. It may be the high sierra, dusty plains, lush rainforest, or a suburbia of tiny, identical houses – but wherever you live, here’s your chance to bring it to life through the charming mix-and-match methodology of haibun

Looking out my patio window just now I saw so many different birds visiting my yard eating the birdseed I had put out.  Previous to today there had been only a flock of Chickadees and occasionally a robin but today many different kinds descended at once together! It seemed as if someone had created a flyer advertising a free lunch in my yard!  That thought inspired today’s poem 🙂

Nature’s Live Performance

A foraging army boldly flew

Into my area of wet green,

Peaking the interest of one

Gray squirrel long and lean,

Who romped about

And in between.

A nature

Convene

Live!

I happened to be in the right place at the right time today as a flock of Chickadees flew into my yard at the same time the gray squirrel was visiting!  Camera in hand, I was fortunate to be able to video the complete show!

Sharing Seed

Bids in Winter sharing birdseed

Birds in winter

Hopping all about

Scratching ground

Searching for

Nourishment under the snow

Birdseed is welcomed

I love to watch the birds in my backyard. All Spring and Summer I enjoyed watching a family of Doves, some Cedar Waxwings, Blackbirds,Sparrows and occasionally was fortunate enough to catch sight of a Hummingbird, but now that it’s Winter I don’t see many of my feathered friends, it’s usually just a squirrel or two that is scurrying around. But today, I happened to see quite a gathering of Chickadees hopping about looking for food. They are such cute little birds! Their presence, and also the BlueJay that joined them, was a treat to see, and also a reminder to make sure to keep the birdseed available to them this winter. I figure that’s the least I can do since it’s a such a joy to see them visiting.
