The Great Coverup Searching For Smiles

Girl with smiling eyes wearing a face mask

Masks try to

Hide smiles

Yet our eyes

Overcome

Every

Place I go

I see masks

Cover up

People’s mouths

But not their

Smiling eyes

Syllabic Verse

Smiling with your eyes, also called the “Duchenne smile” or “smizing,” makes you look like you’re genuinely happy. Smiling with your eyes is hard to fake, and it helps to channel good thoughts so you’ll seem more sincere. Once you get really good at it, you can even smile  using only your eyes!

Dealing With Downers

Disappointment quote with pic of a puppy dog

Don’t entertain those

Dogged disappointment days

Dismiss and disown

Them from depressing your life

Discuss your problems

Resolve to dissolve

Seek the positive

Discover ways to overcome

Don’t let despondency win

There’s always failure. And there’s always disappointment. And there’s always loss. But the secret is learning from the loss, and realizing that none of those holes are vacuums.” —Michael J. Fox

Are You?

Dandelion growing in cracked dry ground

Falling through life’s cracks?

Or are you a ground breaker?

Growing in the hard places,

Blooming where you’re planted,

In spite of dry times,

Letting nothing hold you back,

From reaching your goal?

Modeling tenacity,

Like teeming dandelions?

Insecurity Vanquished

Hands holding bible

Filled with doubt I elect to stand

Holding fast His words in my hand

I trust and overcome fear,

Embrace life, enemies sneer, as they disband

Florette

(Based on Psalm 37: 39-40

But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.)

Enveloped by Fear

Walker

That silver cage that surrounded me

Had now become my closest friend.

I’d come to depend on it.

It was ready to support,

Always there for me.

How could I possibly

Decide to

Let it go

For a

Cane?

It had stood ready to help me in the night.

When I was alone it brought me comfort.

I did not have to worry,

It wouldnt let me fall again.

I was safe with it,

Yet, it held me back.

No! Fear held me!

So I took the

Cane and

Walked!

NaPoWriMo 2018. Day 6

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that stretches your comfort zone with line breaks. That could be a poem with very long lines, or very short lines. Or a poem that blends the two.
